Ulrich Riebau, master builder, founded the company and opened his offices in Hamburg in 1956. His engineering work focused on a variety of sewer construction measures as well as development and road works in the metropolitan region of Hamburg.

In 1970, Dipl.-Ing. Karl-Friedrich Kröger took over the well-established offices for civil, underground and road engineering and continuously broadened and extended the range of services that they provided in the areas of municipal drainage, sewer construction, transport and road works.

Dipl.-Ing. Manfred Lehne joined the offices as a partner in 1988 and brought with him the many years of experience he had gained from a variety of construction projects in Hamburg. It was also at this time that the company was renamed Ingenieurbüro VBI Kröger + Lehne. Dipl.-Ing. Lehne changed the character of the business by extending its range of services into the areas of traffic planning and road works, the construction of waterways and dikes, development projects, power line construction and rail systems. Dipl.-Ing Kröger left the firm in 1995 from when on it was continued by Dipl.-Ing. Lehne under the name of Ingenieurbüro VBI M. Lehne.

The company's name was changed again in 2008 to Ingenieurunternehmen LEHNE Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH für Bauen und Umwelt – LEHNE ing. for short – in order to better meet the increasing demands being placed on clients, the work being carried out and the company itself. At the same time, Dipl.-Ing. Michael Meyn and Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Paul joined the company bringing with them over ten years of experience as managing directors in the Hamburg region.

Dipl.-Ing. Manfred Lehne left the firm at the end of 2008. Dipl.-Ing. Meyn and Dipl.-Ing. Paul now run the business.
